"Winter is coming."
That phrase can cause residents of cold-weather states aka Michigan to become overwhelmed with feelings of dread. But there's not much you can do besides accept teh inevitable and prepare for it. So I compiled a list of ten cold-weather essentials to keep in your Vehicle, just in case.
- Ice Scraper: Chances are you already have one. However if you don't I recommend the ones with the brush on the end.
- Windshield Washer Fluid: Discovering your windshield washer fluid is empty is the worst when it is snowing. I would recommend spending a few extra bucks for the cold weather fluid so it does not freeze on you.
- Shovel: I would recommend a smaller one that is condenses to a smaller size.
- Snacks: A few bottles of water will never hurt. Maybe even a snack bar. Just in case.
- Warm Wearables: Keep a hat, gloves/mittens, socks or even a blanket in your car at all times. Never hurts to have too much clothes than not enough.
- Traction Aids: A small amount of Salt, sand or even Cat litter can be useful when in slippery conditions.
- Necessary Medications: If you are on the road, make sure to stock up on any medication you need just in case you get an unexpected delay.
- Jumper Cables: Cold temperatures can quickly deplete your vehicle's battery. I keep a set of cables in my trunk and also have a small Lithium ion powered jump box. ($99 at Art Moehn)
- Plug-In Phone Charger: The cold can drain your phone's battery. Making it difficult to make a call or text. I would suggest carrying a car charger or a back up charging battery at all times.
- Onstar: On most GM vehicles your vehicle comes equipped with onstar. With the Onstar Safety & Security plan, Onstar emergency advisors can help keep you connected. Just push the red Emergency button and an Advisor is there to help.
